Medical Face Masks

NHS Worker

The widespread use of face masks by the public could put NHS supplies at risk, says Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers.

In hospitals, different types of masks offer different grades of protection. The most protective is an FFP3 or, alternatively, an N95 or an FFP2.

NHS staff in lower-risk situations can wear a surgical mask. This includes healthcare workers within one meter of a patient with possible or confirmed Covid-19. These staff may be in hospitals, primary care, ambulance trusts, community care settings and care homes.

    Hi there,
I’m a hearing impaired frontline physiotherapist working at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS.
The Covid-19 pandemic has been challenging for me personally because I’m a lip reader and the use of surgical masks in clinical areas has increased recently.
So far, I’ve been ok and been able to adjust the way I work, and doctors/nurses have been willing to whip off the mask for a socially distanced chat, etc but the latest UK government insistence that masks are worn all times in both clinical and non- clinical areas will make it almost impossible for me to continue.
Thus, I am interested to learn more about your transparent face masks. There is a small team if people I’m working with at present and if they could wear such a mask, then it would be a great help. I will speak with Leeds Teaching Hospitals management his week.
Presumably, these masks are not for clinical use? (Low risk areas in my case). Thank you for appreciating the issues individuals such as myself have.
    Regards
    Jonathan
